Patrick Long Explains The Importance Of Proper Heel-Toe Shifting

We’re on to the 3rd installment of the driver training part of Porsche’s Driving Challenge contest. In part one (1) Patrick explained how to set the proper seating position in your Porsche. Part two (2) was all about understeer and oversteer. In today’s installment Patrick takes Jack and Elvin through the importance of Heel-Toe Shifting. This really isn’t a lesson on how to Heel-Toe as that simply takes practice more than anything else. Instead, Patrick walk us through why heel-toe shifting is important and how downshifting better, smoother and properly will make you faster and is more important that quick up-shifts. In addition, our two winners get to try their skills and compare them against the 911 R’s “blip” feature found in Sports mode. The 911 R is supposed to be a “driver’s” car so it seem counter intuitive to let the car match the revs for you, but as both drivers found out, unless they get better, the computer does it better.

  • PDK is better than a manual now, too, but it doesn't matter. Unless you're a pro, it's about fun and feel, and I'd rather heel/toe around fun mountain roads than have the car do it for me.

    • I think if you are an 'R' customer, its all about the experience, so heel and toe is probably central to that with the manual transmission; I hope you can enable sport mode and disable the auto-blip feature as well
to enjoy the other benefits of that mode w/o the auto-blip if you choose to!
