What is a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and Why is it Important to Have?

WHAT IS A PORSCHE CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY? –

A Porsche Certificate of Authenticity is a valuable document that comes directly from the Porsche factory.  Included on the document is the original build information specific to your Porsche.  It includes your Porsche’s original factory specs (options you ordered with your car), your Porsche’s Birth Date or production completion date and the MSRP or manufacturers suggested retail price.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE? –

It doesn’t matter if you have an older (antique) Porsche or a newer model, all Porsche cars are collectible (as far as I’m concerned).  A Certificate of Authenticity can be valuable for resale, restoration and on the concourse.  As certain model Porsches become more and more collectible, a Certificate of Authenticity is a must. I have ordered one for each of my P-cars and I’ve always been glad to have them.

HOW MUCH DO THEY COST? –

For model year 1948 to 1979 they are $110.00
For model year 1980 to present they are $95.00

You can get a $10.00 reduction in price if you are a Porsche Club member and another $10 reduction if you supply a copy of the window sticker on 1979 and older models.

HOW DO I GET ONE? –

Unfortunately, you can’t complete an order online at this point. However, you can download an order form here.  Once you have completed the form you can fax it to 1-800-322-2436 or mail it to:

  • i purchased a certificate of authenticity on my 911 sc that was stolen from me. i may have found my car, the books, records, window sticker, title, C of A taken as well. this was done by a X friend. can i get a copy of certificate or anything to help prove this car was mine? thank you in advance for your help

  • @Dennis,

A COA does not prove ownership. It is used to prove provenance, or more correctly, to show how the car came configured from the factory. This is important to most buyers and sellers in that they want to prove the originality of the car.

I would think your best bet for proving the car was/is yours would be any registration documents, insurance documents, bill of sales, etc. Your registration would/should have the VIN number that would identify the car as having been owned by you and I'm assuming you reported it stolen???

  • I have witnessed older porches selling for a hell of a lot more having the Certification of Auhenticity. In fact the 100.00 investment is said to increase the car's value up to 10-30% higher with that piece of paper. Keep in mind it only helps the owner if the specifications on that paper match what the car has. For instant a certification with an engine # is only valuable to a matching numbered car. I have seen the certifications increasing values tremendously with 356 and early 912 models. 912 models have increased dramatically over the past year. I just saw one sell for over 45k with a COA. And 356's are increasing almost 50% with a COA. Good Luck

  • I am looking at a porsche that is truly a 5 Speed as the vin # number indicates, however the window sticker indicates the same vin # but indicates a 4 Speed automatic.

    What gives?
