A massive cargo ship, the MV Grande America, sank last week off the coast of France’s Bay of Biscay with a few thousand brand new Audis onboard, as well as a few special Porsche 911 GT2 RS deliveries. A piece of cargo lit on fire on March 12th aboard the vessel, and the flames quickly spread. Luckily everyone aboard was rescued without harm, but the fire continued to ravage the boat, before it gradually listed onto its side and slowly sunk the following day.
Porsche won’t confirm how many of the 700-horsepower ultimate 911s met their demise in the murky depths, but the upshot is that the German car maker will re-start GT2 RS production (which ended in February) to fulfil these orders. The Porsches were intended for customers in Brazil, so it isn’t likely that many GT2 RS were aboard, but perhaps half a dozen or so would be the right number. If you’re a Brazilian GT2 RS owner, you just have to wait a little bit longer for your car to be delivered.
As for me, I’m booking a flight to France and mounting an underwater recovery effort to get myself a new GT2 RS. It might be a little wet, but I’ll just strip it out and make it a track car anyway.
