After a slow start in Arizona, and a lackluster auction weekend in Paris, the Porsche market bounced back to provide lots to get excited about in Florida this weekend. Outside of the Jerry Seinfeld Collection, which deserves applause in and of itself, there were plenty of other great and exciting lots, from race cars to brand new street cars, vintage lots of all kinds. Some lots inspired bidding to soar sky-high, and other lots ended much earlier than they probably should have. Some buyers got some bargains, and some sellers were wowed with their final hammer earnings. In all, this weekend shows promise for a great auction summer season moving into Monaco and Monterey. There is literally something for everyone these days, so get out there and get to bidding!
Gooding & Co. Porsche Auction Results
- The Seinfeld Collection – A few notes about the infamous Seinfeld Lots
- I was completely blown away that the 917/30 didn’t sell for much higher. Jerry paid $4.4 million for this Porsche four years ago, and only managed to get $3 million. The bidding stopped at $2.8 million, which was below the car’s reserve. Gooding reports having sold the car after the auction, however, in a private deal.
- Another bargain of the century was Lot 048, the RSK, which sold for a couple of million dollars less than I expected it to. It’s hard to call a $2.8 million dollar car a ‘bargain’, but in this case it is justified. Considering that this was one of the major cars of Roger Penske’s career, I’m surprised it didn’t go for more.
- The IROC RSR sold for well over the pre-auction estimate. There are only a few of these still around, and I don’t believe any of them are in quite this condition. For a car with so much history, though, the bidding was well deserved. At a touch over $2 million dollars, this has to be one of the most expensive collector 911s ever sold.
- I think the GS/GT Speedster might have been a relative bargain as well. I fully expected that car to exceed $2 million. I hope the new owner enjoys it.
- I have not stopped drooling since I first saw that 550 Spyder. I wish I were its new owner. Gorgeous piece of history, that one.
- The fact that my two favorite Porsches at this auction, the 908 Coupe and the 911 ST, ended without a realized sale made me a little bit sad. These two cars deserved some attention, and either one of them could have made an excellent vintage racer for some enthusiast to wring every last rev out of. With a couple spare million in my account, that enthusiast might have been me.

BONHAMS
Some might have been surprised by seeing a six-figure 928 at a prestige auction, but for those of us who have been keeping a keen eye on 928 GTS values for the last 5-years or so, this shows a high watermark, but is hardly surprising. A nice low-mile car like this one should never be overlooked. Excellent car, and an excellent buy for the new owner.
I’m not sure what is happening with Carrera GT sales lately, but this one seemed strange. Bonhams (like Gooding) failed to provide a pre-auction estimate, and I can’t say that I’ve ever seen that before. The Bonhams car had a scary sentence fragment at the bottom of their listing however that would strike fear in the hearts of anyone who has ever dealt with Craigslist buys or even eBay on occasion; “Title in transit”. Might that be part of what had bidders looking elsewhere for their mid-2000s Analog Supercar?
I’m not sure if the “Andre Agassi” celebrity factored into the final sale price of his old 1989 Slant-nose 930 Cabriolet, but that was an excellent sale price for that car. I hope the new owner puts the car’s original Fuchs wheels back on, though.

RM SOTHEBY’S
The RM Auction was an interesting display of Porsche 930 Oversaturation. There were a whole lot of 911 Turbos in Amelia Island to be sold this weekend, and RM had a whopping three of them in just 9 Porsche lots. The first two across the dais did alright, with an early 3 liter car selling for a little below market, and a final-year 3.3 coupe selling for decently above the market. The third, however, was a non-starter and failed to sell. It would seem that the people who wanted a 911 Turbo on Saturday bought one.
I also found it supremely interesting that the 1960 356 Super 90 Cabriolet sold for more money than the 1960 356 Super 90 Roadster, even though the Roadster is far more rare and desirable. While I haven’t seen these cars in person, I can only speculate that condition may have been a factor, but I still would have expected the Roadster to do better than it did. Whoever bought that car got a supreme bargain.

My first time to Amelia and wow It was over load......Plus nice Porsches on the field Sunday Plus the cars and coffee on Saturday which was nice .
Hey, Russ,
Glad you enjoyed it. Amelia is THE best show in the U.S. in our opinion. It is so much more approachable than Pebble Beach and has car of similar caliber. The only thing that Pebble, Monterey has going for it over Amelia is its location and proximity so many incredible Porsche collections, restoration shops and enthusiasts....
Thanks for the information
