2016 Porsche Monaco Classic Auction Results

Monaco was an interesting auction for Porsche buyers (and sellers), as there were a few exceedingly rare lots that you’re unlikely to see ever again, and haven’t ever seen before. With a GT1 and a 924 GTR leading the way, there were a handful of other rarities and long-time auction stalwarts in the Principality over the weekend for sale. Pretty much everything sold for less than expected, but there were about as many no-sale lots as we’re used to, which never ceases to surprise. It would seem that the Porsche fervor has worn off slightly, but not enough to appreciably decrease the value on blue-chip collector-mobiles.

RM Sotheby’s

RM’s lot list was probably the most exciting of all those auction houses assembled. They had a GT1, an art car, a Ruf CTR, a 2.7 RS, a 959, and a Carrera GT. No matter what level of performance you were looking for, they had the era-appropriate supercar for you. Whoever was in charge of selecting their roster of available cars has done an amazing job, and their Porsche-centric knowledge is showing. As far as realized prices go, they got about what they expected out of each of them, however the ‘Art Car’ sold for far less than I’d thought it would, and the 356 1600S Roadster going unsold seems surprising as well.

Bonhams

Bonhams had a lineup that was packed with historically significant Porsches, but unfortunately for them, RM showed up with almost the same lineup, and then some. Some of these lots sold, but some of them were surprisingly low on the bids, most notably the 959 Komfort. The 959 had been professionally restored by Friesinger Motorsport, and part of that included a repaint, which probably accounts for the low selling price. I’d guess most of the Porsche fanatics were seated at RM’s event, and forgot to attend the Bonhams auction. Or at least, that’s what the results indicate.

Coys

COYS had a very 964 and 993 heavy lineup in Monaco this year, but their headliner was the very rare and very well cared for 924 Carrera GTR. Unfortunately, they have not yet given their final sales numbers, so we can’t exactly report those just yet. As soon as they are released, we’ll update this post with the realized prices.
