Is The Bad Boys Porsche Really For Sale?

Back in 2008 the 964 Porsche Turbo 3.6 used in the movie Bad Boys was purchased by Matt Drendel and added to his wonderful collection at Heritage Motorwerks.

After Matt’s untimely death in November 2010 his collection was entered in the Gooding auction at Amelia Island in 2012 where a number of his Porsches broke all kinds of records. In fact, one of the lots to be sold was the Bad Boys Porsche. However, at the last minute, that particular Porsche was pulled from the auction by the Drendel family after they decided to hold onto it for personal reason.

Misleading Stories on the Web

Recently we noticed a few stories online highlighting an AutoTrader listing and stating that the Bad Boys Porsche is for sale. That’s simply not true. At least as far as the car we know to be the Bad Boys Porsche is concerned.

After reading the post on AutoTrader it’s easy to see how someone could be fooled. As you can see above, the listing states “original car from movie “Bad Boys“.

However, as the Porsche in the movie had black interior and certain other identifying characteristics (European front license plate, letter proving provenance, prop guns in front trunk, etc.) that don’t match with the Porsche in the Autotrader listing we decided to verify it for ourselves. Two emails and one call later it was easy enough to confirm that this isn’t the Porsche from the movie as we know it and the original Bad Boys Porsche isn’t for sale.

First we sent an email to the seller via Autotrader. We asked for the VIN and if they could provide anything to show the provenance is what they say it is. Here’s how they responded,

It’s the same make and model as the car in Bad Boys.

We responded saying, “Your ad suggests it’s the actual car. Is that not the case?” We received the following one line response,

I repeat, it’s the same make and model.

Obviously, the seller doesn’t want to provide any real info so we can only assume it’s a marketing tactic to get attention for the car. We think it’s quite misleading, but that’s probably why it’s been for sale for so long (we first heard about it back in 2012 on a thread at PelicanParts).

Next step was to simply pick up the phone and call Bobby at the shop where Matt’s collection called home prior to the Amelia auction. Bobby assured us that the Bad Boys Porsche was right there in the shop and not currently listed on Autotrader.

So, as with any purchase, buyer beware, do your homework and make sure you’re getting reliable information. If the Bad Boys Porsche ever does come up for sale we’ll let you know as soon as we hear about it.
