Public Auction of 21 Porsches. Are They From Maverick Marsalis’s Infamous Collection?

We recently saw a headline for 21 Porsches being auctioned along with the contents of a “15,000 square foot high-end garage and living quarters”. The auction notice went on to describe the former owner of the “assets” as someone who was featured in past issue of “Heavy Hitters” Magazine (issue #13). The description, along with a few of the pictures, seemed somewhat familiar so we decided to do a little more digging.

One of the few pictures that had us looking for more info

Our first Google search was on the term “Heavy Hitters Magazine Issue 13”. This immediately brought up the video you see below. The video is short, but the garage and some of the Porsches, and other items, certainly look to be a match for the stuff being auctioned. What it didn’t provide was the name of the person featured in Heavy Hitter’s Magazine and the owner of the Porsche collection. We decided to keep digging.

A quick jump over to Rennlist (RL) and a search for “Heavy Hitters Magazine” brought us to a few threads that jogged our memory. The threads go on to identify the person featured in the Magazine, and the owner of the Porsche collection in question (at least at the time of publication), as Maveric Marsalis. We now remember him as someone discussed more than once on RL in terms that can only be described as colorful. Of the two threads we saw, both hinted strongly that further research was necessary. So, we did.

It’s the Internet and Results are Mixed

The first entry in Google, if you search for Maverick Marsalis is not flattering. It’s a link that takes you to the site ripoffreport.com and outlines three different complaints that vary in detail but have the same overall theme (they all allege he’s a con-man). However, the next link takes you to a thread on Pelican where some posters don’t think too highly of Maverick, while others points out what a stand-up guy Maverick really is and how he’s won awards in the past for his Porsche customization work.

At this point, we decided to stop digging. We’re not trying to do heavy investigative journalism here so we’ll let you pass your own judgement on Maverick. We were simply interested in the provenance of these Porsches and think we found our answer. Hell, even Maverick himself Tweeted out a picture that’s eerily similar to one shown on the auction info page. UPDATE: We did ask the question of provenance directly to the contact listed on the auction page, and they confirmed that these are indeed Porsches previously owned by Maverick. No word on what happened or why they are being sold.

Details on the Porsches for Sale

The description for this sale states that 21 924, 944 and 928 Porsches are available. It describes some as “rare and one of a kind” but is short on specific details. It goes on to say that the collection is a mix of “complete and running restored and/or customized vehicles, vehicles less engine and project cars.” Lastly, some “are show and special display vehicles, including cars for Adidas and Louis Vuitton.”

We were able to get a more detailed inventory list of the auction. The image below is a screen shot of the file we were sent (click on it to make it bigger). It’s complete with VIN#s for each Porsche. The auction itself is on December 1st in Los Angeles and includes other items besides the Porsches (memorabilia, vintage coke vending machines, a large scale train set, etc).

Further details are available at premiereauctioneer.com or contact Joe Wingate via the info in the image below. If you’re thinking of attending, there is a preview at 9:00 am and the Auction itself starts at 11:00 am. Good luck and as always, do your homework before bidding!

UPDATE: We just uploaded over 150 photos to facebook with more detailed pictures.
