Our Favorite Porsches On Ebay This Week: Volume 17

For all of the eccentric and eclectic Porsche collectors and enthusiasts out there, we’ve decided that it is about time someone aggregated the best of the best that eBay has to offer in the Porsches-for-sale department. Now we’ve tracked down five more exciting Porsches for folks to purchase. The list includes an uber rare 356 Carrera Speedster, a gorgeous Arena Red 993 Turbo, a RUF 3400 K, a beautiful late 914 1.8, and a questionable early 912 ‘project’, plus something just a little extra this week. Some of these cars could be great collection investments, while others might prove to do more financial harm than good.

1. 1956 Porsche 356 A 1500 Carrera GS Speedster For Sale

This is a bit of an odd bird, but it has one really good thing going for it, the VIN tag. A Carrera Speedster is a rarity, a super rarity, and for the last couple of years, they’ve been nabbing over a million dollars at auction. Those cars, however, were 100% perfect. This one, decidedly, is not. First, the bad things. It doesn’t have its original twin-cam engine. It is currently painted in a very strange combination of metallic blue with yellow stripes. It needs a full scale restoration to be considered viable for any major collection. However, there are a few good things. The aforementioned VIN matches all of the sheetmetal and the gearbox. The replacement roller bearing 1600 engine is worth some money, not nearly as much as a four-cam engine you’d need to source (generally at least $100,000 dollars), but perhaps $10-15 thousand. Now, the buy-it-now price sits at just a few thousand shy of a million, which seems a bit much to me. This car will need at least a six-figure restoration to be worth that kind of buy-in assuming you can get past a non-numbers matching motor. That said, you don’t come across cars like this every day.

2. Arena Red 1996 Porsche 911 (993) Turbo For Sale

This tastefully modified 993 Turbo could be a deal, given the current state of the 993 Turbo market. In the last week, I’ve seen some low mileage cars attempting to fetch over $400,000, so if you’re comfortable with a driver car, you can have this one for just over a quarter of that. It’s in my favorite color for a 993, the beautiful Arena Red. Even better, the interior is “Cashmere Beige”, which makes it one of the most desirable color combinations. As modifications go, they are few, but they are noteworthy. A set of 996 turbo twist wheels in 18″ sizes fill the wheel wells. an  Aerokit II (Turbo S) front lip and rear decklid spoiler, and a pair of Gemballa side skirts. Personally, from the looks of the car, it’s gorgeous, and I’d rather have this one than a perfectly kept stock piece with no miles. Porsches are built to be driven.

3. 2006 Ruf 3400 Kompressor (Porsche Cayman) For Sale

‘RUF’ is one of my frequent searches, and when something like this comes up, I just have to share it. This might be one of my favorite RUF creations in recent memory, as it takes my favorite chassis, the 987 Porsche Cayman, and ups the ante a little bit. A supercharged 3.4 liter that ‘officially’ offers 400 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque provides power to the rear wheels, but there are some owners that have dyno sheets showing more than 460 horsepower and at least 350 lb-ft. As you can tell from the photos, the car looks much more aggressive from the front, and the interior is sprinkled with GT3 accouterments. I think this car will fall somewhere in the 996 Turbo price range, but it’s much more rare, offers a much more focused driving experience (no all-wheel-drive gives better steering, and the mid-engine chassis is sublime), and a much more thrilling drive.

4. 1975 Porsche 914 1.8 For Sale

It’s not often that I send praise in the direction of a 75-76 big-bumper 914. They are much heavier and less focused than their earlier siblings. This one, though, is so nice that it deserves a bit of merit. It’s difficult to tell for sure from the photographs, but this appears to be Zambezi Green, which is one of my favorite 914 colors when viewed in person. It’s also the 1.8 liter engine, which is my personal favorite, being a more rev-happy engine than either the 2.0 or 1.7 liter. Porsche actually developed the fuel injection system on the 1.8 liter with Bosch on this one, rather than letting Volkswagen run the show as they did on the other two engines. It looks pretty nice, and of course, I’d like the in-person opportunity to check under those plastic rocker covers for rust, but it could be a good buy.

5. 1967 Porsche 912 Project Car For Sale

There isn’t much I can say about this car. It has a buy-it-now price of $2500, and that might be too much. As near as I can tell, the only really redeemable pieces on this Porsche are its four relatively rare 14″ Fuchs alloy wheels, and maybe the brake calipers. There might be some suspension and steering components that are worth rebuilding or repairing, but the chassis has significant damage and is probably best served by cutting out the useable rear quarter panel, and the front trunk panel could be sold for a profit to someone doing a backdate project. That said, this Porsche is practically in my own back yard, and if I had more time, space, or money, I’d probably be down there looking at it right now with $2000 greenbacks in my left pocket and $500 more in my right.

Bonus – Porsche 962 Exhaust Headers For Sale

I always love coming across vintage racing components on eBay, because it would seem to me that there is a very limited number of buyers for something like this, and certainly doesn’t have wide appeal. In my eyes, it would be easier to cold-call all of the owners of 962s and ask them if they had need to purchase such parts. To the sellers, I know a few of them myself, if you’re interested, I might be able to find a home for them. Interestingly, the seller also has a number of other racing components that might be of interest to some of you.
