Our Favorite Porsches On Ebay This Week: Volume 24

As a new editor offering my “Top 5” picks from ebay, you may shake your head a bit. Fine. Maybe you’ll want to argue with me. Better. Maybe you think I’m an idiot. Stand in line. In any case, I base my picks on years of experience of walking through concours lines where “originality” is king and where I get bored looking at 43 examples of Ruby Red Speedsters and listening to arguments over the proper wiper nob. I’ve also been to lots of Cars and Coffee events where it seems that “exoticity” has become a disease, especially when it’s paired with stupid amounts of horsepower and Hot-Wheels inspired paint jobs. To me, for something to be interesting, I have to want to bother the owner with a handful of questions about how s/he got the thing, why s/he kept it, and how long s/he plans to keep it. And then I want to have to play with it myself; driving it, taking photos of it and recording its sounds.

So here are my Top 5 ebay picks for the week of June 8, 2015. Porsches that I want to know more about and play with next Saturday:

1. 1966 911 Coupe, offered for sale at $98,500

This Porsche has me curious for a number of reasons. First, if it were a 1966 model 911, you might consider that the 1966 model was the least produced of any Porsche 911 except for the prototype years of 1963 and 1964. Even more so, the car is described as chassis #304068. That changes the story considerably. Though it may have been purchased in 1966, my sources say that chassis was built between September and December of 1964, making if a VERY early car and even more rare. In 1964 only 235 911s were produced. The car is my top pick of the week because I have more questions than can be answered in this little piece about its build date and lineage. While I initially thought $98,500 to be a high price for an expensive restoration of a 1966, for a 1964 I would jump on it. NOW! [Buyer beware, Caveat Emptor and all that. 2. 1971 Porsche 911 911T, at $8,999

My second pick of the week is something most of you might sneer at. There isn’t a lot to say about it because there isn’t a lot to describe. It’s a tube-frame autocross special/desert buggy/drag-racer powered by a 2.2 liter 911T. I get so tired of “purism” that I just love it when this kind of stuff turns up at a PCA event. Its only claims are that it’s wickedly fast and more fun than a night in 1950s era Tijuana (my metaphor). 3. Porsche 919 Hybrid 1:1 Model Car. Starting bid $7370.00

My next favorite ebay Porsche offering isn’t actually a car. It’s a model. And we all love models right? Many of us built models of our favorite cars years or decades ahead of when we actually owned the real thing. This one takes it to the next level. It’s the Porsche 919 Hybrid 1:1 scale model car. Starting bid is $7,370. Whoever wins it will receive free shipping (within the Porsche Asia Pacific Region) and a trip to Singapore. The model is one of 13 Porsche built as display models to show at car-shows and club events during the lead-in to last year’s first in decades Le Mans program. The eBay auction is meant to benefit the SportCares Foundation and Movement, a Singapore-based charity aiming to improve the lives of underprivileged children, needy seniors and other disadvantaged people. 4. 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo S Convertible, heavily optioned for $246,685

OK, I had to have at least one hot-rod. Who doesn’t drool over the Champion ads. You have to dream a little, because I’ve never actually seen one in person. Have you? I’m guessing most of them live in Qatar or United Arab Emirates or Monaco. Even as I complained about “exocity” in my intro, I will admit to have woken up in a sweat more than a few times when I’m dreaming about driving one of these, with Scarlett Johannson in the passenger seat and pulling up to valet parking at the Grand Casino in Monaco on Grand Prix weekend. In the dream, Lewis Hamilton breaks away from his date to quiz me about the Porsche while Scarlett demurs. Specs, you ask? It’s green. That’s usually about the time I wake up. 5. 1971 Porsche 911E 2.2 Targa for $35,100.00

This one is green, too, in a way. I was drawn to this Porsche on ebay because it reminds me of a friend who is a noted private restorer of Porsches. He found a 1975 911 in dire need of help, got it at a good price and set about restoring it. It was robin-egg blue when he got it and had been red at one other point in its life. He was determined to restore the 911 to its factory production line condition, with no regard to time or money. Long story short: he did a fabulous job, with great attention to every detail. Only problem was…the car is Olive. There is not an enthusiast who views the car and doesn’t say “Wow, amazing restoration…but why OLIVE?” So I chose this one. But this one goes one better. It’s a Targa. For me the Targa is the model that I love and I hate. I love it with its top off; one of the most beautiful open-top cars EVER and Porsche to the core. With their tops on…Targas are butt-ugly and still Porsche to the core. That said, the top-off Targa still beats any of the more technologically modern Targas with sliding glass roofs by many county kilometers. If you want a Porsche that will bring you attention, forget about any of the others on this list: the Olive 1971 Targa will get you all the attention you’ll ever want…explaining why you have the Olive car.
