Numbering perhaps only in the dozens, Rauh-Welt Porsches are a bit thin on the ground, and honestly this is the first time I’ve seen one come up for sale. Usually, if you want one of your own, you find yourself a nice 964 or 993, order up the not-insubstantially expensive pieces of bodywork, have them painted in your color of choice, pick our your massive wheel and tires package, and book a flight for Akira Nakai to come to your shop and install the pieces in his own exacting way. Make sure you have plenty of cigarettes and Stella Artois on hand, as these are his fuel. He is not a car tuner, and these are not cars, he is the artist, and your fenders are his canvas. In the case of this car, Rauh-Welt Los Angeles build #1
This is not the car for the person who wants to be on hand when Nakai-san works his magic. This car is for someone who wants an RWB Porsche, but doesn’t want to go through all of the rigmarole, or wait all those months for the process and transaction to occur. This is the instant gratification of being able to pick it up today. If you’re the kind of person who appreciates the blown glass work that Dale Chihuly does, but you’d rather purchase one of his existing pieces than wait for him to have the time to make a custom piece for your foyer, then perhaps this is the car you’d put in your garage.
Personally, I See The Appeal Of This Approach
There is this psychological term known as ‘burden of choice’, meaning that it becomes more difficult to make an informed decision when you are presented with choices too numerous. For example, when people are given the choice of near infinite color combinations, or wheel and tire options, or interior components, they are more likely to experience ‘cognitive dissonance’ more commonly known as buyer’s remorse. In the case of this Porshce, all of that is done for you already. The car is ready, and the only choice you need to make is if you want to buy it or not. For that level of stress relief, this Porsche is pretty much a bargain at the $140,000 asking price.
