RM Sotheby’s Selling #LUFTAUTO This Weekend At Luftgekühlt

This Sunday, the 10th of April, the folks in charge of Luftgekühlt will be running their third annual show at Modernica in Los Angeles, and this Safari 911 is scheduled to be something of the centerpiece if you will. Built in conjunction with what amounts to the entire Porsche building community, the car will be auctioned off at the show this weekend to benefit “Autumn Leaves Project”, which is a charity dedicated to funding pancreatic cancer research.

The vision for this car was initialized between Pat Long and Howie Idelson (the co-founders of Luftgekühlt) and intended to bring some of the “Safari” style to the west coast. The car started out at Emotion Engineering, where Joey Seely laid the groundwork by stripping down the 1985 Carrera to its base elements and building it back up with mechanical upgrades and suspension work. From there, the 911 headed up to Emory Motorsports where Rod Emory handled the design, fab work, and installation of the rally-style bits. Rod has had a couple rally-ized 911s in his day, so this was something of a homecoming for him. From there, Benton Performance and John Benton handled wiring and electrics, Carby Tuckwell of Deus Ex Machina handled some custom details, and Pelican Parts provided some DIY expertise, as well as a smattering of parts needed for the build. Tom Ridings managed transportation of the 911, and Jeff Zwart helped develop and shake down the car, because who else would know what makes a good off-road 911?

Additional parts for the build were supplied by KW Suspension, Pirelli, BRAIDusa, Recaro, ERP Suspension, WEVO, Rothsport, Tarett Engineering and Rennline. I don’t know about you, but those BRAID wheels look pretty awesome on this beast.

If you want to bid, you’ve got to pre-register with RM’s LA office by contacting vperry@rmsothebys.com or calling 1-310-559-4575.
