If you’re a true Porsche fanatic, surely it will show in how you decorate your homestead. Framed photographs, vintage posters, and memorabilia likely scatter the walls of your house, but how do you let the outside world know that you’re Porsche crazy? Perhaps a living sculpture of a 356 is to your taste? Topiary Joe has got you covered.
Making his living as a sculptor, Joe builds living sculptures for major international marketing campaigns, and is frequently commissioned to assemble intricate designs ranging from dragons to Formula 1 cars. Joe’s favorite sculpture, though, is this replica Porsche 356/1, the official “first Porsche”, which happily graces the entrance to his driveway.
There was only one 356/1 ever produced, a mid-engine aircooled roadster built in a ramshackle sawmill in 1948 Gmund, Austria. This car led to the production of the 356/2 series, lovingly called the “Gmund coupes” that formed a more traditional basis for what was to become the 356. It really is the genesis of Porsche, the first in a long line of amazing automobiles. The Porsche 356/1 rolling sculpture is certainly worthy of being immortalized with Joe’s welded steel frame and boxwood.
Joe’s 356/1 sculpture has recently come up for sale or trade, and is listed on craigslist in Knoxville, TN. Read the text from the ad below.
Porsche 356 rolling sculpture – $24,000 (Tellico Plains, TN)
Wire sculpture tribute of the good Doctor Porsche’s First 356. 1948 was the start of the most famous series of Porsche. We spent two months creating this full scale, rolling work of art in wire, then covered her in a faux boxwood topiary style covering. She is being restored with new covering… www.topiaryjoe.com shows my other automotive art as well as grand scale Living Logos and Public Art. I made her for an exhibit then brought her home where she is happy, but I could see trading her on another old Porsche or Mercedes (’50s-’60’s-’70’s). In need of a newer Suburban or pickup to tow sculptures with as well. Cash talks and we deliver sculpture world wide. Nuttin but cash and or trade. No help needed selling her, but it would not hurt you to order a full scale topiary of your zillion dollar trailer queen in the garage so you could give your wife a really special gift…. 🙂
It is obvious from his automotive stable that Mr. Topiary Joe is a true Porsche fan with the gorgeous pair of matching white 912 and 914 taking their spots in his driveway. Personally, I think the 356/1 is awesome, and if I had the space, I’d love to have one of my own.
