Would You Spend $300K on a Porsche 993 Turbo S or Buy a Carrera GT Instead?

That’s the question you would have to ask yourself if you were considering purchasing this 1997 911 Turbo S for sale on eBay (shown below). With only 186 miles on the clock and one of only 182 manufactured in 1997 the seller has an asking price of $305,000. In my mind, that’s Carrera GT money. In fact, here’s a decent example for sale at nearly the same price.

How High Can the 993 Market Go?

You may remember last summer we asked, How Much Would You Pay for the Perfect 993? Back then, the answer turned out to be nearly $125,000 for a super low mileage, normally aspirated 993 C2S. Since then, the 993 market seems to be getting even hotter. However, is it hot enough to support a $305,000 asking price for a Turbo S? I guess we’ll see.

Either way, I’m curious. If you had the money and had to choose, what would you buy? This 993 Turbo S or a CGT?

  • You're taking the fun out of owning a Porsche !!!!!! I purchased my first 911 in 1984 $ 40,000.00 sold it 2 years later for $ 45,000.00. Then a Turbo for $ 60,000.00 3 years later sold for 75,000.00 same guy and on and on with 4 more over $ 200,000.00 in this economy it is a huge risk not worth taking unless you just want to drive it and don't care abou the investment. I buy them as an investment like Real Estate......

  • at 300,000, I would never want to drive this to a parking lot anywhere in the world.....
How much is a brand new GT2.....nuff said???????????????

  • I've seen this one. It doesn't have the "turbo s" logo on the door handles. Off color of two tone gray interior. $305k is just too high. I've seen other sites list 97 turbo s for suggested price of $185K with under 25k miles. CGT for $350k all day long on the net!

  • I love the 993 TurboS but that's just crazy money for basically a car that you can hardly drive. In this instance it pains me to say it would have to be the CGT because you can actually enjoy it. In my case, I would drive the piss out of it!
Since I can not afford either of these cars, just give me a nice well maintained, used air cooled 911 Turbo of any year that I can enjoy any time I want.

  • Well I have a '97 993 Turbo that has been upgraded with the GT2 package and a Fab Speed Exhaust. I know the performance level of mine is robust and with only 32K on the clock it is a pleasure to drive and watch the current market. While $300k is quite extreme remember the market will only support what someone is willing to pay for any one item. You can ask any price you want but is someone going to pay it? As the last of the air cooled 911 variants these should and will appreciate as long as they are in good shape. Too many people don't take care of these investments and they virtually are while a nice car not worth any investment pricing. Now the CGT is an awesome ride don't get me wrong but the maintenance costs are out of my price range and the over all performance is not worth an extra $200k to me personally. If money were no option then I'd have both!

  • I have just bought a 1993 carrera turbo with 36000 original km, factory equiped with 430 hp and aerokit.
Has anyone know how many cars like it where produced and the aprox market value of a car like it?
    Thank you.
    Daniel

    • Hey, Daniel,

How much did you pay for it? That's the market value. :-)

Seriously, I'm unsure what version 964 you have as I know of no factory model that came equipped with 430 hp. Can you provide more information?

      • I am sorry , is a 1997 993 turbo 430 hp and aerokit, i live in Argentina and there are only a few, I wanted to know the international value, thank you
        Daniel

        • Daniel,

Again it's not enough information. If you want, use our contact form and email us more info. Condition? # of owners? color? Options? Mileage? The VIN would help. Right now, we're seeing 993 Turbos selling from a low of $75k up to well over $100k depending on condition and mileage.

  • Blue colour, 35.000 real km, aerokit, 430 hp factory, 6 speed manual, excelent condition, thanks.
    Daniel

    • I'm only asking $100,000.00 for my Porsche C2 964 cabriolet in Amazon Green with Tan interior with only 70K, with whale tail and or electric wing. Any takers?

      Victor
