We tend to spend a lot of time surfing around various Porsche related sites looking for information, new products and story ideas. Some times we find all three in one spot. This was one of those times. Last week I was trolling around on one of our sponsor’s websites (SuncoastParts.com) when I stumbled upon their New & Featured products page. Now this post isn’t meant to be a plug for SuncoastParts. Instead, it’s meant to highlight perhaps the most expensive Porsche part I’ve ever seen. The Porsche 918 Spyder Magnesium Weissach Wheel Set. Care to even fathom a guess as to how much these wheels are? I’ll give you a hint. If you had ordered them new as an option on your 918 (without the Weissach package) they would have added a cool $32,500 to your price tag and that would have been a bargain. But, and it’s a big but, that assumes you’re not getting the original wheels you pay for in the MSRP so you’re actually getting them at a discount as compared to buying them after the fact.
What Exactly Are You Paying For?
If you bought the Weissach Package with your 918 (which we’re told about 60% of all people did) you’re basically buying weight savings. For $84k more than the “base” 918, the Weissach package is 99lbs lighter at 3,616 lbs. The weight reduction comes in the form of a lighter brake design, ceramic wheel bearings, titanium bolts for the chassis, various interior changes (among other things), and of course, the wheels. In fact, it’s the Magnesium wheels that make up the bulk of the weight savings as they are nearly 30 lbs lighter than those that come standard.
Enough already, so what do these cost to buy them now? The MSRP is $58,099. However, you can have them for the bargain basement price of just $49,500 (tires are not included). That’s roughly $1600 per pound of weight savings. What’s even more incredible is that SuncoastParts says they might have just sold a set. Check out all the details here.
