Despite Rumors to the Contrary, Pricing for the Porsche 918 Spyder Remains Unchanged

Earlier this week a thread on Rennteam.com caught the attention of major automotive blogs across the web (Jalopnik, TopSpeed, WorldCarFans, etc.). A particular poster on Rennteam is apparently a depositor on a 918 Spyder and periodically provides updates on the information he/she receives from Porsche. One such post (this time from a moderator vs. the depositor) provided an update in terms of pricing (at least pricing in the European market). As a result of these posts, sites across the web started to report that pricing for the Porsche 918 Spyder had been “leaked” and was now close to $1,000,000. However, what those sites failed to mention is that pricing for the 918 Spyder has actually already been released and the pricing they’re reporting isn’t accurate (at least not for the US market).

It’s Common for Porsche to Have Price Differences Between Markets

Without fail, every time Porsche releases a new model, pricing differs from market to market; they call it “market specific pricing”. Take the recent release of the Porsche Panamera Platinum Edition. In the US it was quoted as having a base price of $80,500 and $84,600 for the rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models, respectively. However, if you read the German release the rear-wheel drive version is quoted at EUR 79,707 (that’s over $103k US) and 87,323 (that’s almost $113k) for the Panamera 4 Platinum Edition. Those are huge differences and quite common for different geographic markets. These differences in “market specific pricing” are the reasons for the discrepancy in pricing and the source of all these rumors about a $1,000,000 dollar Porsche.

The Headlines About Porsche 918 Spyder Pricing Are Simply Wrong

There’s a big reason we don’t post rumor and conjecture on PorschePurist. It’s just that! All of these posts are actually harmful. It’s amazing how people can be influenced by very simple blog posts. Just because it’s posted on the web DOESN’T make it true. We do our best to do our due diligence, but we’re not infallible either.

Bottom Line is That Pricing Remains the Same

The cold hard truth is that pricing for the 918 Spyder, in the US, is still $845,000 for the base MSRP. It will, of course, go up with options, but that’s only natural. However, and perhaps most importantly, PRICING REMAINS UNCHANGED since it was first introduced well over a year ago. We confirmed this with PCNA earlier tonight and expect further details (we think option pricing) in the next day or two.

Please be sure to check back soon for updates and don’t believe the hype. While $845,000 is a lot of money, the 918 is a Porsche unlike any other. For those that can afford it, and who have put down the requisite six figure deposit, they know what they’re paying and what to expect. More to follow.
