Video: The Peaceful Tranquility Of The Porsche 918 Assembly Line

Car assembly is usually a loud and dirty process, and the assembly line is never a pleasant place to hang around. There are impact guns and automated robots making noise. Porsche’s 918 Spyder assembly line does things a little differently, however. Everything is done by hand, everything is done by artisans. This video accurately depicts what its like to work in the 918 werks, from the hand laid alcantara interior to the completely hand assembled engine, everything is done in a calm, cool, and collected manner.

What interested me more than anything about this video is how quiet the assembly process is. Sure, there are some electric fork trucks and hydro-pneumatic lifts, but the typical noise of assembly is absent. The clicks of precise torque wrenches, and the faint scrapes of gap gauges are about all you’ll hear. It’s quiet enough that I might have to brew a few pots of coffee per day in order to stay awake doing those jobs. The end result, though, is one of the world’s best hypercars. Porsche should be proud.
