Aftermarket single-DIN headunits have been available with bluetooth, XM and USB connectivity for some time, but aftermarket systems often carry the burden of clumsy interfaces with showy graphics which are a poor match for Porsche interiors. Early last year, Porsche debuted an OEM solution for integrating modern navigation and infotainment features into its classic models. This updated radio has been tested over the last year by Porsche on trips in the USA and Canada
Styled to match Porsches classic design aesthetic, this radio includes two styles of knobs to match different eras of Porsche cars. The system is based on the Porsche Communication Management system used in modern Porsches. The new interface is operated by two knobs and six integrated buttons flanking a 3.5″ LCD screen. For navigation, maps can be displayed in two or three dimensions, and map information is stored on an 8gb MicroSD card.
The system also supports wireless calling, iPod and USB connectivity, as well as XM satellite radio. The system’s audio component sports an integrated amplifier with four 45 watt channels. The radio can be wired to a custom speaker setup, or to the car’s stock audio system via an optional adapter cable. For bluetooth use the system sports an internal microphone, as well as provisions for an external microphone. Devices can be controlled directly via the radio, and USB connectivity is via a separate media box which supports USB 2.0, AUX inputs, and iPod/iPhone connections.
Full specifications for the system can be viewed on the Porsche classic website, and the system is said to be compatible with all aircooled 911s, along with the 914, 912, 924, 944, 968 and 928. Pricing information for the US has not been posted at this time, but the system sells for 1,184 Euro including VAT, which is approximately $1,300US.
