Right around the Christmas holiday last week stories started popping up online about a 911 Safari concept. I don’t know if it was the timing or the fact that the story seemed so far fetched, but it didn’t get a lot of attention.
According to Car and Driver, a magazine in Germany titled Motor Revue (a subsidiary of the much better known Auto Bild) published a story about a new off-road “crossover” concept, based on the 911 Carrera 4, that would debut at the Beijing auto show this April. Featuring larger tires, higher ground clearance, skid plates and an off-road capable suspension, this particular model 911 is said to be aimed at countries with less developed infrastructure (read that as lots of bumpy roads) but deep pocketed customers (China, Russia, the Middle East, etc.).
The story goes on to say that if the concept is well received we could see the real thing by 2016. While we’re quite skeptical, we did recently see this video about the Porsche 911s “Alter Ego” that has us thinking twice about coincidences.
