Porsche’s Designers Made A Race Support Van Concept

The original Porsche Renndienst van, a high-roof Volkswagen Type 2, was employed throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s as Porsche’s European racing support van. That little red magic bus carried tools and spares for everything from 718 Spyders to formula racers and 904s. It’s fair to say that this van has seen a lot of action over the years. Back in 2018 Porsche built a modern electric version of that same van. Using the van design as a way to project Porsche style onto an unorthodox shape, the design team in Stuttgart took futuristic Porsche styling and added it to something with a bit of Porsche DNA to create the Porsche Vision Renndienst (Race Service) van.

While it’s obvious that Porsche isn’t going to bring a van to market any time soon, this one might not be so farfetched as you might imagine. Likely based on Volkswagen’s coming electric architecture, Porsche could easily push a VW platform under a compact people mover with Porsche style. This concept has seating for six, with the driver mounted in the middle of the car for optimum sightlines and sense of speed and distance. If you didn’t want to pack this electric van full of tools and spares for, say, Porsche’s Formula E team, it could be used to transport the race team to the track or something.

It sure isn’t your traditional Porsche design, but if the company were to build something like this, I’d love to have one in my driveway. Imagine a Taycan with seating for six and a high roof. How cool would that be? Bring the whole family for your Porsche adventures. The electric future may bring Porsches of all sizes and shapes. We didn’t think they’d ever build an SUV either, right?
