Alfa Romeo Stelvio QF Takes On Porsche In The Performance CUV Game

Porsche’s Macan Turbo has been the car to beat in the performance compact utility vehicle segment for quite a while, because it has an excellent blend of power, weight, and agility. There are a few competitors trying to take the Macan’s crown recently, including the more lux Volvo XC60 T8, the Jaguar F-Pace, and this stunning Italian beauty, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio. The Alfa is an impressive take on their current design architecture, aping the gorgeous Giulia sedan, only jacked up on all-wheel-drive stilts, and a long roof fifth door added. So if Porsche’s Macan Turbo is the king, can Alfa’s performance oriented Stelvio steal the crown? That’s the aim of this new video from TFL Car on YouTube.

While this comparison is largely limited to 0-60 times and an exhaust sound-off, both of which are areas in which the Alfa prevails, this is the first real comparison of the two shown back to back. The Stelvio QF was just launched for journalists to drive, and should be hitting stores soon, it will be interesting to see how Macan drivers react to them in real world situations. We guarantee that Porsche will continue to outsell Alfa, simply by virtue of availability and access to dealerships. Furthermore, the Macan is a known entity when it comes to reliability, while the turbocharged V6 in the Stelvio has not exactly been faultless in the Giulia QF over the last couple of years.

The 400-horsepower Porsche’s real-world 0-60 time of 4.6 is exactly what the factory claims the car will do. The Stelvio QF has 105 additional horses under the hood, and manages the 0-60 sprint in 3.9, which is impressive, but understandable given the extra pwoer. That said, a more fair comparison would have been between the Stelvio QF and a Macan Turbo with the ‘Power Package’, which Car & Driver says will smash the 0-60 run in 3.7 seconds. Alfa knew exactly what they were doing comparing the non-performance-pack Macan, setting the Stelvio up to look better. Ultimately, you’ll have to decide which nearly-hundred-grand compact SUV is right for you and your family.
