Porsche Carrera GT vs Porsche 911 R. It’s not a comparison you would think to normally make. They’re two completely different cars. Porsche’s last true analog super car with a V-10 engine and no “nannies” vs. what may be one of their last normally aspirated flat-six engines in a light weight, no frills 911 shell. However, with 911 Rs now trading at auction in the same price range as low-mileage CGTS, it’s a comparison that has some merits.
There were 1,270 CGTs produced between 2003 to 2007 vs. 991 911 Rs. The CGT is powered by a 5.7 liter V10 engine producing 612 hp while the 911 R delivers 500 hp from the 4.0 liter flat-six otherwise found in the GT3 RS. Both are 6-speed manual transmissions and both are capable of top track speeds of at least 200 mph (officially 200 mph for the R and 205 for the CGT). When new, the CGT has an MSRP of nearly $450,000 as compared to an MSRP of $185,000 (if you could get one, which unless you purchase a 918 Spyder, there was a good chance you couldn’t). Now, “used” 911 Rs are starting to pop up in the after market and in the auctions and their fetching prices that three to four times higher than their original MSRP. That brings us back to Carrera GT money.
Let’s assume you had the money and both cars were available to you for purchase? Which would you buy? Which would make the better investment and why?

I was at the Hershey Swap Meet several years ago, and someone turned up with a Carrera GT. The first time I heard that V10 as the owner pulled in, I was sold. It sounded like my favorite era of Formula One- Ayrton Senna won the driver's championship the year I was born in a V10-powered Mclaren MP4/5B. That bezerk, high-revving V10 sound stayed with me through my formative years as a gearhead.
No need to think hard, CGT for me please! ????????????????
