Report: Porsche is developing a 7-seat SUV even bigger than the Cayenne

According to a recent report from Automotive News and The Drive, Porsche is developing a massive three-row SUV with a vertical rear tailgate codenamed Landjet. Don’t get me wrong, Porsche Landjet is a super awesome name, and I hope something eventually gets that name, but do we really want a Porsche family hauler? Does anyone? Apparently Porsche thinks so, and it has been right about stuff like this in the past. There was a time when Porsche only sold two seaters (come on, the 911 doesn’t actually have a back seat), and then 2003 happened and we have seen the explosion in popularity of the company’s Cayenne and Macan crossovers.

These days Porsche sells more cars than it ever has in history, and a little over 60 percent of everything it sells is a crossover. With ever increasing variants of the Cayenne and Macan, including the Cayenne getting its own GT division developed model this year, Porsche is increasingly becoming an SUV company that occasionally sells a sports car or sedan. So sure, maybe a three-row gargantuan soccer team motorhome is the right move for the company that built its legacy on winning Le Mans more times than any other manufacturer.

According to Automotive News, the Landjet is still in the development stage and might see the production light of day in the second half of the decade, sometime around 2026. A lot of things could happen between now and 2026, so we won’t be holding our breath for the eventuality that this car comes to light, but just keep it in the back of your mind that this is a possibility. Allegedly dealership staff have already seen the coming vehicle in prototype form, and have been informed that it will launch in plug-in hybrid form with a battery electric version coming shortly after launch.

Apparently the vehicle has been described as being “rakish” in appearance and “very un-Porsche like”, which checks out. It’s possible the Landjet will share a platform with Volkswagen and Audi models as well, much like the current Macan and Cayenne do. That would make sense, too.

What do you think? Are you in the market for a hybrid Porsche mega SUV?
