Why Early Porsches Provide Maximum Pleasure From a Minimalist Package

Kurt Gerhardt describes his 1969 Porsche 911 T as a “solid car“. That might just be a bit of an understatement as he goes on to say, “No matter what it just keeps on running and you can beat it up a bit and you can haul-ass and it still does great and starts up every day.” Now that’s a Porsche worth keeping and one of many reasons you can get so much driving pleasure from such a minimalistic air-cooled package.

Our very first Porsche was a 1973 911 T w/CIS. We bought it for a lot of the same reasons Kurt describes in the video below.

  • It was as fast as we needed it to be
  • We could just get into it and drive
  • If something broke, which was rare, it was easy to fix and parts were readily available
  • It was a solid car

Kurt plans on taking his ’69 911 T on the next Peking to Paris Rallys in 2019. This fun but brutal trip encompasses anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks of driving where participants average between 400 and 650 kilometers a day. That may not seem like much, but when you take into account they’re all doing it in pre-1976 cars and a lot of it is off-road through parts of the world with little to no infrastructure, it’s down right amazing. Our only hope is that Petrolicious or someone else tags along to document Kurt and his Porsche on such an incredible trip.
