A Porsche to Die For

I realize I shouldn’t laugh at others misfortune, especially when it results in injury or death, but in this case well, you be the judge. If you’re not familiar with the Darwin Awards, they’re named in honor of Charles Darwin, the father of evolution. The Darwin Awards commemorate those who improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it.

Fitting snuggly between the priest who sailed to heaven on a lawn chair supported by helium filled balloons and a steel-cable thief who forgot that his intended score was attached to something big and heavy 40 feet overhead lies the subject of today’s post. An unsuccessful attempt to save his precious Porsche landed him in the No. 2 spot on the list of 2008’s most stupid ways to go.

(July 16, 2008, Italy) Ivece Plattner, 68, was queued at a traffic light in his Porsche Cayenne sportscar. Before one reaches the light, there is a railroad crossing. As you might imagine, given Murphy’s law, a train was coming.

The man did not let the queue progress forward far enough before he crossed the railroad. The safety bars came down, leaving the Porsche trapped on the rails. It took the driver awhile to realize he was stuck, according to witnesses. Finally, he jumped from the car and started to run — toward the oncoming train, waving his arms in an attempt to save his car!

The attempt was successful. The car received less damage than its owner. He was pushed hard enough to land 30 meters away, and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Is the Cayenne a sportscar? That's a big can of worms and not one I'm sure I want to open. :-)

I will say this, having driven the entire Cayenne line, I would put the GTS, Turbo and Turbo S trim levels up against most any recognized "sports" car and they would hold their own. Not bad for an SUV!
