LEGO 911 GT3 RS Fails Crash Test in Spectacular Fashion

What happens when you crash a LEGO Porsch 911 GT3 RS in a similar fashion to the way car manufacturers perform crash tests for production models? That was the question the crazy crew at c’t Magazine (one of Germany’s larger computer magazines) asked themselves when coming up with the idea for this test.

Here in the States we have organizations like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that provide ratings after performing their own crash tests. Germany has similar institutions, one of with is ADAC (General German Automobile Club). Comparable to AAA here in the U.S., besides helping drivers stranded on German roads and Autobahns, ADAC performs crash tests of their own.

Working in conjunction with ADAC, c’t Magazine utilized their crash test facilities to see just what would happen when a LEGO’s 911 GT3 RS, from the Technic collection, was crashed into a 40% offset “impact block”.

Launched along a 50 meter track, the LEGO 911 reached speeds of nearly 28 MPH before impacting the wall. How did it take the impact? See for yourself below.

Fortunately, no real world Porsches were hurt in this experiment. However, the LEGO 911 didn’t come away unscathed. Not only did it basically explode on impact, but just like in a real-world test, the left front suspension and front wheel were damaged beyond repair. Hopefully, they had “agreed to value” insurance…

  • Quick math: real gt3 is about 14 ft long. Lego gt3 is about 2 ft. Or 1/7th the size. Multiply the speed of the lego car by 7 and you get about 200 mph (196 to be exact). Lego gt3 did ok considering. Love to see a scaled 60 mph or even 100 mph crash video.
