Porsche’s history in Le Mans is more storied than any other marque. The relationship began in 1951 when a Porsche 356 finished 20th overall. Nearly 20 years later Porsche took their first overall victory with a 917. Since then, they’ve gone on to make history with more wins than any other manufacture (16 total). And while their 2014 return might not have seen the perfect results fans wanted, they still made history, and set a world record, in the Porsche Carrera Cup race at Le Mans.
Organized by Porsche France to celebrate the return of Porsche to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, this unique event saw the largest field of Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars since the 2011 Carrera World Cup race at the Nürburgring. More specifically, with 62 cars Porsche set a new record for the most 911 GT3 Cup cars (type-991) in a single race.
In the 45-minute sprint, drivers from the Porsche Carrera Cup France locked horns with those from Carrera Cup Great Britain on the fast and iconic Circuit de la Sarthe. An exciting race culminated in a dramatic last lap, with Britain’s Ben Barker snatching victory.
