Reader’s Ride For Sale: 1985 Porsche 911 Turbo

The 911 Turbo left American shores in 1980. From 1981 through the end of 1985, all 911 Turbos that came to the US came via third party importers. These grey-market examples often combine some very desirable traits, such as European market lighting, simplified emissions systems, and greater power than earlier US market cars. This particular example was reportedly picked up at the Porsche factory by the original owner, and imported to the United States soon after. The original owner kept the car for 14-years, and the seller has owned it for some 17-years. This 930 features factory sport seats, special order Slate Blue Metallic paint, and BAR certification for full California emissions compliance.

Upon import to the United States the car was reportedly converted for full US compliance, with DOT and EPA certifications included. Staggered, polished Fuchs wheels are fitted under the wide wheelarches. Visible US market alterations on grey-market 911s are relatively minor, and include a pair of fender-mounted side markers, and a set of additional rear-bumper reflectors. The bumpers appear to be stock European market items, with widely spaced rear bumper blocks. The factory headlamp squirters are working correctly.

The car is powered by a 3.3-liter turbocharged flat-six, which produces 44 horsepower more than the earlier 3.0-liter US-market Turbo Carreras. Recent services include a 45k-mile service performed by a Porsche specialist, new tires, shocks, front and rear brakes, and a new battery. The California-compliant exhaust with catalytic converter is included, though an un-catalyzed exhaust is currently installed.

Save for an aftermarket stereo, the interior appears to be free of modifications. The air conditioning blows cold, and the seller states that no squeaks or rattles are apparent. The deeply-bolstered factory sport seats feature taut, black leather.

All 930s offer a thrilling driving experience, with an enticing blend of performance and serious touring capabilities. As many have been heavily modified over the last 40 years, finding near stock examples can be a challenge, making 930s like this a rarity. This 930 is currently available on Ebay with a $135k starting bid.
