Dario Franchitti – 4 Time IndyCar Series Champ and Well Known Porsche Fan – In Spectacular Crash During Houston IndyCar Race

Just yesterday we witnessed an absolutely vicious wreck at VIR where two Porsches were sent airborne after contact between Marco Holzer’s and Eduardo Cisneros’ Porsches. Fortunately, they both walked away from the crash. Today our friend and well known Porsche fan/owner, IndyCar driver Dario Franchitti, was involved in a horrific crash during the IndyCar race in Houston. A three-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 and four-time IndyCar Series Champion, Dario made contact with Takum Sato’s car when the rear-end of Sato’s car broke loose in turn 5 sliding directly in-front of Dario causing his car to climb over the back of Sato’s.

Amazingly, the “survival cell” in Dario’s car did its job and while Dario was injured, he should recover. Earlier tonight, Autoweek had this statement from Dr. Michael Olinger, the IndyCar director of medical services, issued the following statement:

Izod IndyCar Series driver Dario Franchitti was admitted awake and alert to Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center in Houston for a concussion, spinal fracture that will require no surgery and a fracture to the right ankle. He will be kept overnight.

As you can see in the video, while the fencing kept Dario’s car on the track, debris still rained into the stands. 13 Spectators were injured. 11 were treated at the scene and 2 were taken to area hospitals for further evaluation and observation.

Get well soon, Dario!!
