Porsche Announces 911 RSR Driver Shuffle For Remainder Of WEC Season

Earlier today, Porsche announced changes to their 911 RSR driver line-up for the remainder of the Sports Car World Endurance Championship WEC season. Starting in Austin, Texas, Richard Lietz, winner of this year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, joins forces with Joerg Bergmeister in the number 91 Porsche 911 RSR. Patrick Pilet, who up until now drove with Joerg, will move to the number 92 Porsche along with Fred Mako who replaces Marco Holzer. This leaves Marco out of the championship and back as a full time test and development driver for Porsche.

“We reshuffled the driver line-up in the 911 RSR for tactical reasons. This puts us in a very good position for the remaining races of the season and our campaign for the World Endurance Championship title,” says Porsche Head of Motorsport Hartmut Kristen. “Marco Holzer is an excellent test driver. He will support us for the rest of the season as a development driver for future factory and customer racing vehicles.”

Unknown at this point is whether Richard Lietz will be ready to race in time for the Austin. Having injured his arm during a practice session at the USCC race in Virginia last week, it’s unknown if he’ll be well enough to compete. As a precaution, Porsche has entered Nick Tandy (Great Britain) for Austin as the third driver of the #91 Porsche 911 RSR.

Five Races Remain

Five races remain on the calendar of the Sports Car World Endurance Championship WEC. After Austin on the 20th of September are the races in Fuji/Japan (12 October), Shanghai/China (2 November), Bahrain/United Arab Emirates (15 November) and Sao Paulo/Brazil (30 November).
