Has Porsche Lost Their Independence?

Quite a few reports out over the last few days that Porsche is no longer an independent company. The latest crop of rumors sprout from a report in Der Spiegel that VW/Piech has completed a reverse takeover and purchased the sport car manufacturing division, Porsche AG, of Porsche SE (and in doing so purchased the option to purchase themselves) yet provide no real proof or facts for the basis of their story.

Porsche spokesman Anton Hunger, when asked if a decision had been reached, said, “we have not been informed of one,” he went on to add that the Spiegel report was speculation that the company would not comment on. My personal experience shows that when Porsche makes it a point to deny something, it usually means that the truth is something very similar and will reveal itself shortly.

If the rumor(s) is/are true, what happens to the point being made by Dr. Porsche in the video below?

  • The independence aspect is over-played. Example-->..if no longer independent, a "sports" car company may be forced ( by the parent) to build product-diluting products like SUV's....yet that is exactly what Porsche is doing as an independent...said to do so ironically "To stay independent". In contrast, Ferrari is owned by benevolent dictator FIAT....who understands the marques' cache and allows it to build fabulous GT and sports cars. Only.

  • @Will, interesting point.

Hopefully, VW will follow FIAT's model (as they have for Bugatti) and just keep things at an arms length.

A lot will depend on the behind the scenes battles/relations between the Piech and Porsche families as I truly believe there are some serious bruised egos, on both sides, at this point.

  • Well....as to what the old ad says....remember this.....they also ran old ads that said..."well, we *could* buold a water cooled engine and use front mounted radiators, but that woukd be Stupid ( or "in-elegant"...or whatever term they used at the time).

Yes....with the passage of time and the realities of the "present".....sometimes things we said in past made only sense in the past. Like their statement..."we will always race!"....well , that didn't happen either in the late 90's after their last LeMans win in '98". The official line?....they were "cash-strapped" and were developing their new SUV. Yep.....got their priorities straight. And the cash-strapped comment? Well.....it didn't look so bad beforere last Falls' world economic crisis when "small" Porsche was well and truly on its way to gobble-up large VW....involving "billions" of $$$$$$.
