Let’s All Come Together To Help Porsche Legend Vic Elford In His Efforts To Fight Cancer

Where would the Porsche world be without quick Vic Elford? Most famously Elford took a 911 to victory at Rally Monte Carlo in 1968, then got on a plane, flew to Florida, and hopped in a long tail 907 to win Porsche’s first ever 24 hour endurance race at Daytona. Among hundreds of other wins for the crested German brand of fighting racers, Elford is still known today for his legendary speed and car control. I was afforded a couple of opportunities to meet the chap, and he’s just the kindest face you can ever hope to see in the paddock.

Now 85-years-old, Elford is again battling against prostate cancer. While he’d beaten it before, it has returned. And to make matters worse, he’s also working with limited mobility following a recent broken leg. Last week motor sports journalist extraordinaire Marshall Pruett launched a GoFundMe campaign to help the legendary racer pay his hospital bills. A racer needs to remain singularly focused on the road ahead, and the same could be said of the road to recovery. Elford doesn’t need any distractions right now, but to focus on doing the hard work of getting better. Let’s all band together to make sure one of our favorite racers from history doesn’t have to worry about ravenous hospital and insurance bill collectors for a while.

With 861 donors already pitching in, and the first goal of $150,000 already met, we can do even better. It’s a shame that the medical system is such an overpriced shambles, but the reality we live with requires such that we give what we can to those who need our help.

“With an urgent need to outfit his home with assistive devices, to cover the looming medical bills, and to secure future medical care, the fearless all-around talent would benefit from any support you’re able to give.”

In talking with Pruett, Elford commented that he was “extremely touched by the showing of solidarity and kindness” and wanted to “send this heartfelt thanks to everyone.” For everything you’ve done for us, Vic, we’ll do what we can. Thank you!
