One More Reason to Avoid Craigslist

Anyone remember this story about the unsuspecting Porsche buyer getting beaten and robbed after responding to an advertisement on Craig’s list? Well, it turns out justice has been served. According to the Associated Press, A Queens, NY teenager pleaded guilty to masterminding (seems like way too much of a compliment to me) a scheme that used a bargain basement priced Porsche for bait. After reading this story, it seemed like a good idea to remind everyone that you can never be too careful when buying a used Porsche.

Full story is below…

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — A Queens teenager has pleaded guilty to masterminding a robbery scheme that used Craigslist advertisements for a bargain Porsche as bait.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said Thursday that 18-year-old Agnes Banach, of Maspeth, will serve five years in prison in return for pleading guilty to charges including robbery, grand larceny and conspiracy. Banach will be sentenced on Jan. 22.
Rice said buyers who responded to Internet ads for the Porsche were beaten and robbed in two incidents in Baldwin and Freeport last year.

In the Freeport robbery, a couple who came to buy a 2006 Porsche were attacked by several teenagers and $4,800 was taken. Rice said seven accomplices are awaiting sentencing on charges of robbery, conspiracy and grand larceny.

There’s nothing wrong with buying a car on Craigslist. Just remember, if it sounds too good to be true, chances are it is!

  • I'm happy to see this kid get some serious time (5 years), although he will unlikely serve all of it. Too often guys like this get off light.

    If you ask me, this is a "hate crime." He targeted Porsche people for the obvious socio-economic reasons. He wasn't advertising a Pinto.

    I bet he's out in less than 2 years.

  • It's too bad stuff like this goes down on Craigslist. There are some great deals to be had on Porsches among other things, but a couple of morons ruin it for everyone. Sometimes buying and selling on CL doesn't even seem worth the time, effort or risk once you take all this into consideration.

    Course that rarely stops me from watching for great deals nearly every day!

  • @RHM,

    Hopefully he gets some "special" attention while he's doing his time. I believe the general prison population treats these type of criminal similar to pedophiles. Won't be a happy time for him.... :-)

    @Ryan,

    Like anything, you just need to be smart. Doesn't matter if it's Craigslist, eBay or a local want ad. Just be smart and don't carry a ton of cash. I once turned down an offer on one of my cars because the guy showed up with all cash (about $30k). I simply didn't feel comfortable accepting that much cash, especially given there were three of them and only one of me.

  • So now I have to pack my Carbon 15 when going to buy a car. O.K., cool with me, 5.56 FMJ's are cheap! Anyone who wants to trade $4800 for coughin' up blood bubbles is a fu*kin' dumb as*.
