Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 Receive Optional PDK Transmission

Have you wanted to get yourself into Porsche’s top-of-the-line mid-engine offering, but have been turned off by the row-your-own gearbox? Soon you’ll have the ability to snag a track-focused Cayman GT4 or Boxster Spyder with a 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe. What is commonly known as the best dual clutch in the automotive industry, Porsche’s PDK fires off rapid gear changes and contributes to falling lap times. You know, if lap times are the kind of thing you’re interested in lowering.

Since the GT4 and Spyder were introduced, they have been lauded for sticking to the enthusiast-centric 6-speed manual gearbox. At the same time it’s been given a bit of flak for having its gears spaced too far apart. With second gear being enough for extra legal speeds here in the U.S. most drivers don’t find the need for shifting as much as they like to. Maybe with another gear and a shorter gear stack, the PDK version will be more in tune with enthusiast’s needs? Time will tell.

In addition to the new transmission option for the Spyder and GTR, coming later this year, all 718 Boxster and Cayman models will add a slew of upgraded standard features. The standard, T, S, and GTS 4.0 models will now come standard with dual-zone climate control, heated seats, and auto-dimming mirrors. These were previously pricey options on the order sheet, but now you get them gratis. Apple CarPlay and bi-xenon headlights will also move from the options list to the standard features list.

Also for the 2021 model year, the Boxster GTS 4.0 and Cayman GTS 4.0 are available to order now.
