Porsche issues Taycan recall for faulty software causing sudden power loss

Forty-three thousand Taycans, that’s every Taycan built and sold up to now, have been issued an official global recall. The problem stems from a faulty software issue that causes the Taycan to shut off without warning. Every single Taycan will receive a software update to fix the issue. Porsche exec Klaus Rechberger told Reuters that the random shutdown issue had happened in around 130 cars worldwide, and no crashes were reported to have happened as a result of the issue. While the Taycan is built to accept over-the-air updates, this issue can’t be repaired with an OTA. Taycan owners will need to visit their local Porsche repair center for a one-hour visit to have the problem amended.

Porsche’s first battery-electric vehicle has proved extremely popular all over the world, selling in numbers that make the iconic 911 blush. It’s a comfortable, quiet, and rapid addition to the Porsche lineup, and perhaps the most exciting Porsche launched in years. We have had the opportunity to test out the Turbo S, 4S, Cross Turismo, and the rear-drive “standard” model. Despite not being powered by raucous gasoline engines, the Taycan is still packed with Porsche DNA. Sometimes these highly advanced machines have a few minor issues from the factory that need to be dealt with, which is why recalls exist. The car has barely been available to purchase for a year and a half, and sometimes those first years of a new model come with some teething problems. That’s just what this is. As cars get more complicated, even an infallible engineering firm like Porsche is going to have some issues.

Ultimately, I wouldn’t let the Taycan recall get you down if you’re interested in getting one. Considering the issue has been identified in just three tenths of one percent of all Taycans sold, it’s an infinitesimally small issue, and Porsche is already taking massive steps toward fixing the issue for all Taycan owners. It’s a slight inconvenience to have to visit you local dealer, but it’s worth it to never have that tiny chance lingering in your brain forever. Get your recall taken care of, and have your dealer give the car a detail at the same time. If you’re lucky enough to be in the SoCal area, this would be a great opportunity to make a visit to Porsche Santa Clarita, as your hour visit will go by extremely quickly if you’re checking out the Wunderground museum.
