Porsche Tequipment Launches High Performance Roof Box

We can all readily admit that adding a roof box to our car is a good way to improve the cargo capacity, making it great for longer trips and holidays. But we can also agree that most roof boxes aren’t designed for high performance applications. Sure, they might be somewhat aerodynamic, but you wouldn’t want to go 100 mph with one attached to your roof.

That’s where Porsche Tequipment comes in. While no speed limit in the United States is high enough for you to hit 200 km/h (124 mph), Porsche wanted to make sure that drivers could go that fast with their roof box (think Germany and derestricted Autobahn). That’s why they worked with their engineering team, and hit up the wind tunnel in Weissach.

Development for the box started in clay, just like the development of a full-blown car. That made it easier to take an early idea, put it in the wind tunnel, and find out instantaneous real-world results.

“The test program for the roof box was very demanding,” explains Jochen Schmid, Director Tequipment at Porsche. “On its way to series maturity, it was driven on test tracks for several thousand kilometers as part of overall vehicle testing.”

According to Porsche, the dimensions of the box are 212.0 x 92.0 x 44.5 cm, and it’s capable of holding 480 liters of stuff. Porsche claims that’s 5 pairs of skis or 3 snowboards). It opens on both sids, with dual hinges, and can support up to 75 kg of weight. It’ll be available in High-Gloss Black, Dolomite Silver Metallic, Carrara White Metallic and Volcano Grey Metallic. Though we wouldn’t be surprised if they eventually offer up the box in other colors — maybe even PTS?

Testing started on the Taycan Cross Turismo, but Porsche says it’ll be testing the box for its other cars successively.

If you’re interested in picking up one of these for your Taycan, they’ll be on sale in May of this year.
