Tailpipe May Detach on 2012-’13 Porsche 911. Recall To Be Issued

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Porsche is preparing to recall 2,263 Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera 4 models (both coupe and cabriolet) built between March 7, 2012 through November 12, 2012.

Porsche described the defect as follows, “internal quality testing has revealed that the rear mufflers of the standard muffler exhaust system that were installed during the affected production period do not achieve the required service life. As a result, the exhaust tailpipe of the rear muffler can fracture on vehicles with higher mileage. This can subsequently result in the separation and loss of the exhaust tail pipe

In other words, a piece of the exhaust could fall of possibly causing damage to other cars on the road and making you wish you had opted for the Porsche Sports Exhaust in the first place. Porsches equipped with the option sports exhaust are not affected by this recall.

Letters have not yet been sent to those customers affected, but you can find VIN#s included in the recall in this document. Once Porsche has enough new mufflers they will notify customers and replace affected cars free of charge. This is a voluntary recall by Porsche and there is no immediate danger if you happen to have a 911 included in this recall.
