There might be a safe for your valuables in the door jamb of your next Porsche

Porsche is constantly working on new advancements to separate their cars from the standard fare. Often those innovations make your car faster around a track or more exciting to drive, but sometimes those innovations are related to safety or comfort. In this case, Porsche is working on something that could be considered an in-car safe deposit box. According to a recent report from CarBuzz, Porsche has filed a patent with the German patent and trade mark office (DPMA) indicating it is working on a compartment hidden from sight with the door closed, behind the bodywork in the rear quarter panel, which is accessible from the door frame.

Included in the patent paperwork is a brief description of the proposed component. Apparently it’ll entail a hidden compartment between four and twelve inches deep. Porsche specifically mentions that the compartment could be used to hide an A4 sized sheet of paper, potentially making it a good place to put valuable paper documents during a journey. The compartment would be sealed from the elements, obviously, as the door jamb of your Porsche is typically outside of the passenger compartment rubber seal.

This little cubby hole seems like the perfect place to transport valuables while keeping them out of sight of potential thieves or criminals of opportunity. If you’re travelling on a long road trip with an expensive watch or jewelry, this would be a great place to keep them. Once your car doors are locked, the compartment is not only out of sight, but it’s impossible to reach. Even a locking center console is vulnerable to thieves if they break the window and pry it open. It’s near impossible to pry open a locked car door. Need a place to put your diamonds or illicit drugs? Porsche has you covered. Seems like a great idea to me.
