Porsche Enters The Sharing Economy With Their “Share A Porsche” Program

The whole concept of the “sharing economy” is still very nascent. Sure, certain companies, Airbnb for example, are already household names in their space, but the idea is still in its infancy. That’s why I read with interest a story about a new program called “Share a Porsche“.

Share a Porsche – How it works from ACHTUNG! on Vimeo.

The idea itself is pretty simple. Find at least one other friend, up to a total of four people maximum, and divide the costs of a 12 to 24 month lease on a certified pre-owned Boxster, Cayman or 911. Based on the current offerings, you have a wide range of models to choose from, up to and including the venerable 911 Turbo S. Unlike a standard lease payment, payments made by you and your friends cover the cost of the Porsche, PLUS most other ancillary costs, too (insurance, all maintenance including wear parts like brakes and tires, tax, etc.). The only things not covered are fuel and relationship counseling once you and your friends start fighting over who’s getting more seat time.

All this sharing is controlled by an app that runs on both Android and iOS. Not only can you coordinate your trips and see how long you or your friends have been in the Porsche, you can see if it’s currently in use and where it’s parked.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not sold on the concept. I don’t like to share and I sure as hell wouldn’t want to share my Porsche. Then again, if it allowed me to drive one when I otherwise might not be able to, I’m sure I would reconsider. Right now, the program is only available in the Netherlands and PCNA says they have no current plans to make it available here in the U.S.
