When I was a youngster, my parents spent a lot of time reading to me, and later reading with me. I was inspired to continue my love affair with the written word, and have read hundreds of books because of it. My imagination was expanded drastically, I was imbued with a desire to learn, and I enjoyed spending time with my folks. These were influential times in my life, and I like to think that my entire personality was sculpted at least in part, by those experiences. Reading to your children is important. Wouldn’t it be easier if you enjoyed the book you were reading to them also?
Dwight Knowlton is back with his third children’s book about cars. The first two, “The Little Red Racing Car” and “The Greatest Race” were smash successes, and have received excellent press attention. This new book, however, is about a father, his daughter, and their Porsche race car. Okay, you’ve got our attention. We’re always looking for ways to get a younger generation interested in vintage Porsches, and this could be the perfect tool to indoctrinate the next generation of Porsche nuts. Check out the video below to see what this project is all about.
The new book, called “The Small Silver Speedster” tells the story of a racing driver in the late 1950s traveling to New York to pick up his new Porsche 356 Speedster and road tripping it across the US with his young daughter to race at a number of events in California. The book also heavily features iconic racing driver Denise McCluggage as a prominent point of inspiration for the girl. Honestly, I’m really looking forward to reading this book, it sounds phenomenal.
“The Small Silver Speedster” is a book that I would have loved to have been exposed to as a child, and might have sparked my automotive curiosity at a much younger age. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story-line is compelling. If you have kids, and you want to get them excited about all things automotive, this piece of historical fiction might be the right place to begin. What could be the downside of spending more quality time with your children?
The book has a couple of weeks left to make its goal, but already has hundreds of backers (unsurprisingly). There are many different levels of “pledge” that you can give with many different “perks” you can receive. Here are the available levels for the book.
Base
This level of pledge will receive the book, plus a logo sticker, a 356 Speedster blueprint poster, a “membership card”, and a concept print of the book’s cover art.
One Book – $24
Two Books – $46
Three Books – $68
Super
In addition to the perks of the “Base”, you will also receive a sheet of stickers, and a really cool “Carpe Viam” (seize the road) t-shirt.
Two Books – $84
Three Books – $121
Carrera
Building on the Base and Super levels, the Carrera level also has additional prints, an additional t-shirt, and a cool vintage-look pennant.
Three Books – $243
Four Books – $294
Patron
Patron level backers get five hardcover copies of the book embellished with a cast metal badge on the cover, plus five sticker sheets, five blueprint posters, five concept sketch prints, five additional sketch art prints, four t-shirts, five ‘Seize the road’ posters, five pennants, and one 24X36 giclee of art directly from the book. This level of backing requires a four-figure commitment, however.
I don’t even have children, but I’m backing this project, for sure! Check it out on Kickstarter and get your own copy.
