Unless you were at the race this past weekend in Daytona, and even then you had to be in the right place at the right time, there’s a good chance you missed one of the most entertaining parts of the weekend. Patrick Lindsey, driving the Park Place Motrosport 911 GT3 R experienced mechanical trouble when he lost “drive” due to axle problems coming out of Turn 5. Not wanting to cause a yellow flag, or be unable to return to the pits, Lindsey decided to detour through the infield via an exit road after Turn 5.
Park Place told us that Lindsey’s Porsche did have an in-car camera in place for Fox Sports. However, they weren’t live at the time of his infield trip. Fortunately, someone caught the video above via the live streaming and we have some history of the event.
Perhaps, even more funny that the video were the inevitable jabs via social media and the press conference that followed. In it, Lindsey describes his frustration at being stuck in traffic behind cars that didn’t seem to notice there was a race car behind them.
“The cars this year are a lot quieter and I’ll be damned if we don’t have a horn. Because there is nothing you can do except just wait for them to figure out that there’s a race car there. As soon as they did, they were kind enough to jump up out of the way.”
Lindsey explained how a white Acura was one of two cars that definitely “were not paying attention.”
“I was seriously thinking about tapping the Acura that was just cruising in front of me,” he said. “Then I thought to myself, Well, do I have to stop and like talk to the guy after I hit him? Technically, he signed a waiver to get in here, right? So if he gets hits by a race car, it’s kind of his own bad, so I literally had that, like discussion in my mind about just giving him a little love tap.”
You have to love the infield at races like Daytona. You just never know what you will see. Here’s hoping more video surfaces. If it does, we’ll share it with you. For now, if you’re interested, here’s audio of the full press conference with Patrick.

Lindsey has our sympathy - the problem really stems from a huge crowd this year and all kinds of pedestrians darting from all directions onto the roadway. Of course during the race it is very noisy and distracting, so it is probably just as well he couldn't go any faster - no lawsuits. :-)
