Usually, anything Porsche related that’s also associated with both Steve McQueen and his movie “Le Mans” drums up considerable interest. Such was the case when Christie’s began promoting this 1971 911T as part of their Exceptional Sale. However, despite all the attention, the Porsche failed to sell.
The key to remember with this particular Porsche is that it wasn’t used “in” the movie, nor was it owned directly by McQueen personally. Instead, this particular 911T was owned by McQueen’s production company, CBS Solar Film Studios, and was “used by the crew during production” of Le Mans (however, it was never featured in the movie).
Bought as part of a lot from Jo Siffert, this 911T eventually became the property of McQueen’s mistress, Elga Andersen, after it was gifted to her by McQueen’s production company at the end of the movie. Christie’s had an estimated sales price of $275,375 to $385,525, which is probably part of the reason it didn’t sell. While this is a beautiful ’71 911T with some connections to McQueen, they aren’t as strong as the ties he had to his ’76 930 Turbo. Combine that with the fact that a similar Porsche sold for about half the low-end estimate at another auction this past March and those are the most likely reasons for a “no sale”.
