Patrick Long Explains The Fastest Way Through A Corner

In order to understand a lot of what Patrick explains in the video below you have to have a rudimentary understanding of certain motorsport terms. If you don’t know what Patrick means by “the line”, “apex”, “turn-in”, etc. then take a minute to read our Motorsports 101 primer, then come back. For those of you already familiar with these terms, watch as Patrick explains to Jack and Elvin the fastest way through corners by following the proper line and how to identify it. While his examples are specific to the track at Weissach, the corner types are found everywhere and can translate to any track in the world.

Unfortunately, as much as the video is interesting to watch, and novices can learn something from it, it’s not as informative as it could be. For the life of me, I can’t understand why Porsche is pushing the marketing of a car, the 911R, that’s already sold out.

  • Why market this car? Simple. Porsche is struggling mightily to identify itself as a sports car company when they make most of their money selling trucks.

  • I'm not sure if that's true. I own one of those trucks and it drives better than most sports cars. Why not put the prettiest 911's you have right now?

    • Porsche is destroying the brand to save the company. I drive a Cayman, and I'm a long time Porsche lover, but, when the large majority of your sales are SUVs, "high performance" or not, you risk loosing the interest of driving enthusiasts long-term. I hate to say it, but, now that Lotus is upping their quality, they're on their way to becoming the new, uncompromising Porsche.

  • Lotus has failed before while remaining "pure" to the sporting concept and now they have to opt-out of the US market in order to be "pure". Porsche nearly did that a time or two, but they are living a very fine balancing act in the "market" while remaining profitable. Do you ever hear Corvette people complaining about sharing sales floor space with the Malibus and Silverados that pay the bills??

  • I think people are diluted to think things will stay the same or somehow selling SUVs takes away from the racing heritage they have and continue to dominate. Kudos for Porsche to continue to hit the mark with all their cars and staying relevant. People who can't accept that are living in the past.
