Porsche’s GT2 RS Is Faster, Better, And Easier To Drive Than The GT1

Back in the 1990s, Porsche’s limited edition homologation special GT1 Strassenversion was the king of the hypercar heap. With a 536 horsepower turbocharged flat six, the GT1 was about as crazy as cars got twenty years ago. With a mid-engine layout and a curb weight of just 2535 pounds, it was an analog outlaw, almost impossible to drive quickly, and capable of insane 3.9-second 0-60 runs. In those days it was seen as an impossibly advanced race car for the road. Today, those numbers are barely worth mentioning. The new GT2 RS can beat all of the performance stats of the GT1, including top speed, without breaking a sweat, and all while maintaining a traditional rear-engine 911 chassis and weighing significantly more. Of course it’s aided by 700 horsepower and tires as wide as my torso.

Technology has come a long way in twenty years, whether it be reliable engine tech, turbocharger tech, or tire tech, each has contributed to the 991 GT2 RS’ ability to absolutely stomp the competition. Not only is it faster around the race track than almost any other current production car, it’s also about as linear and tractable as you can expect from a street car. It’s easy to drive, and it’s relatively easy to drive quickly. Compliant and forgiving has never really been the 911 motto, but the 991’s crazy tech advancements have made that a possibility.

Henry Catchpole of Carfection closes his monologue with “If you want the biggest 911 adrenaline hit out there, this is it.” That is an incredible show of endorsement if ever there were one. The guy really knows his stuff, and if he likes it, it’s probably pretty good. For the full rundown of Catchpole’s experience with the car, check out the full video below. It’s well worth watching.
