A new option from Porsche cuts your Taycan’s home charging time in half

If you’re a Taycan owner who isn’t quite satisfied with your charging speeds when plugged in to a level 2 charger, like that of your home 220v module, then Porsche has a new hardware update for you. If you purchased a Taycan and want a faster onboard charger, Porsche will sell you a new 19.2 kW onboard charging module that cuts your level 2 charging times almost in half. Taycans with the smaller Performance Battery have a gross energy content of 79.2 kWh and take around nine and a half hours to charge from flat to topped up. With this new charger, Porsche claims that same battery will be filled up in just a little shy of five hours. Performance Battery Plus equipped cars, meanwhile, have 93.4 kWh of capacity, lengthening current L2 charges out to just over 10 hours. With the new onboard charging module, that’s cut to just 5 hours and 15 minutes.

As an added bonus, this module also adds Plug and Charge capabilities to 2020 Taycans. Plug and Charge is a feature that was first installed on 2021 Taycan models, and allows the driver to plug in at an Electrify America station and immediately begin charging without the hassle of using the app or paying with a credit card. The car is attached to your account and will do all of the communication with the station.

In order to get these super fast charging speeds in your own home, you’ll need a few things first. Chief among them is Porsche’s newest wall charging unit (known as an EVSE) wall box, which retails at $1586. That fast L2 is going to suck down the juice, and therefore needs to be fed by a 100-amp circuit. It’ll work with lower capacity circuits, if that’s all you have, but it won’t deliver the times quoted above.

The module is available as an upgrade option for your new Taycan, and you can get it by selecting the KB4 option line item. If you already have a Taycan and want to upgrade it, Porsche will retrofit the new equipment for a cool $1850, plus 12 hours of installation labor, so you’re looking at four or five grand depending on your local labor rates, and you’ll be without your precious Porsche for a couple of days. Those couple of days, however, could save you precious hours when you’re running late for an appointment and need a bit of extra juice. What’s your time really worth to you?
