Porsche Installs First 800v Charging Station

Porsche’s new innovative “Turbo Charging” station has seen its first customer facing installation this week featuring a pair of 800-volt charging stations in anticipation of the new Taycan full electric sedan set to launch early next year. Current DC fast-charging stations for electric cars normally operate at a voltage of around 400, which translates to a charging speed of around 40 minutes for a 250 mile range charge. For that same distance, Porsche claims the Taycan will charge at around twice that speed when in conjunction with this 800v system. 20 minutes seems like a reasonable time to wait for a 250 mile range, not significantly more than a stop for fuel and a snack in a gasoline car.

The Taycan will be the first series-production Porsche to make use of the new 800-volt tech. When plugged in with Porsche’s proprietary “Combined Charging System” connector, it can make full use of the ultra-quick charging times. Two new chargers were installed as a pilot program test for the innovative technology at the dealership in Berlin-Adlerschof. The plan is to used these two chargers to set the stage for integrating similar fast-charging ports at Porsche Centers worldwide.

Karsten Sohns, Managing Director of Porsche Deutschland GmbH:

“In this rapidly evolving world of mobility, we are consistently preparing ourselves for the launch of the first fully electric Porsche model, the Taycan. Having an appropriate charging infrastructure at our Porsche sites and beyond is an essential component of our strategy.”

While Porsche has already indicated they intend to make customers pay for their charging services in the future, this charging park is available for free to all electric vehicles during all normal operating hours for Porsche Centre Berlin-Adlershof.
