Is an All Electric Macan in Porsche’s Future?

Porsche is in the process of investing 3-billion Euros in their electric future, so it would only make sense that they are interested in getting in on the electric CUV market by building a Macan-shaped Mission E. Based on what we know about Porsche, we’re confident that “Mission E” is more than just a single model, it’s a way of thinking, a corporate ethos. Much like BMW’s “EfficientDynamics”, Porsche appears to be using Mission E as their statement for the next decade of development. Porsche intends to leverage electric motors in an effort to make their sports cars ever faster and more exciting. I have no doubt they can make that future a reality.

According to this report by Autoevolution, Porsche Cars North America CEO, Klaus Zellmer, describes an electric Macan as “a possibility for us“. Porsche’s hybrid models have proven quite successful, as two-thirds of the Panamera models they sell in Europe are of the E-Hybrid variety. While Zellmer’s quote doesn’t quite confirm the E-Macan, Porsche has previously indicated that they expect half of all cars sold to be electrified (hybrid or pure EV) by 2025. Being that the Macan accounts for a hefty chunk of the company’s yearly unit sales, they’d certainly be smart to start there. Considering that Tesla has moved an enviable 50,000 Model X SUV units this year, Porsche certainly wants to get in on this performance luxury EV market.

We kind of expect a version of the Panamera-based Mission E sedan to be shown this week at the LA Auto Show, and sales success of that model will likely determine Porsche’s route for the future. Given the performance benchmarks Porsche promises, we expect Mission E to start flying off the proverbial shelves. That massive investment in EV tech by Porsche simply emphasizes how they see the future. Enthusiasts are in luck, because we predict a dealer lots will be filled with Porsches sporting Acid Green calipers and E-Hybrid or Mission E badges. The new age of E-Porsche is heading our way. Climb on board or get out of the way.
