Just last month we wondered if any of the 10 Porsches from the Don Davis Collection would set records when they crossed the auction block. This past Saturday we found out. According to RM Auctions the entire event was resounding success achieving more than $21 million with 100% of the lots sold. Out of that group, 10 Porsches were sold for a combined $2,483,250.
The biggest Porsche sale of the bunch was the 959 Komfort edition, shown above, that sold for $770,000 including buyer’s premium; a new record for a 959 sold at auction.
The “bargain” of the day, in our opinion, turned out to be this 1975 Porsche 911S Targa. With matching numbers and just 40,400 miles showing on the odometer. Some lucky buyer got a bargain at $55,000.

That sure is a good looking Targa. The color is right, the S engine is peppy, and the mileage is nice, but someone paid a whole lot of scratch for a mid-year 911. In the "non-auction" sector of the market, those are struggling to crest 30K.
You get what you pay for, I guess.
Brad,
You definitely get what you pay for. However, we're seeing these sell for significant dollars and climbing. Given the low miles, Targa, S model, matching numbers and what we believe is original paint, we think it was a steal. If you see something in similar condition in the $20s, let us know as we'll put it in the garage. :-)
The rise in price for a 959 is interesting since they were selling for less than half that a year ago. Wonderful to drive and pure Porsche - handling, sound, power and excitement. Maybe the world is catching up to what the people who have owned / driven / loved them since new.
