While the star of this particular sale has to be the $2.3 Million sale of a gorgeous Porsche 904, the startlingly large pile of money paid for this 1951 Split-Window 356 is perhaps even more exciting. While the 356 market has been softening lately, it’s nice to see a truly great Porsche appreciated for its perfection. This 356 sold for nearly double its low-end estimate, and from the looks of it, the buyer got a really great Porsche. Was it worth a over a million dollars? Well, to the buyer it was worth it in the moment. Let’s just hope they don’t suffer from cognitive dissonance as a result.

This is a case of “worth” being a very tenuous term. According to some folks who have seen this particular 912 in person, it was definitely not worth what it sold for. In point of fact, they essentially painted a picture of a non-running, neglected, and badly repaired car that will need tens of thousands of dollars in repairs and new parts to be roadworthy again. When a nicely cared for and running 912 can still be had for less than $60,000, and nice 911s can be had for comparatively not much more, buying this one for over $113,000 seems like a terrible idea to me. The seller will be laughing all the way to the bank, however.

The Bonhams auction had a handful of nice Porsches, but nothing particularly exciting, as it goes. With their 911 Carrera RS going unsold, and the high dollar earners being a pair of nice 356 Speedsters, the 911s were really outshone. This early 911S with optional fog lamps looks particularly nice, featuring a great color and nicely restored finish. It isn’t much in this world of million-dollar motorsport legends, but of the Porsches Bonhams sold, this is the one we’d most like to drive home in, for all that’s worth.
