Riding the Depreciation Curve: Which is the Best Boxster to Buy Used?

Thinking about buying a used Boxster and wondering what year and model will give you the best deal? The crew over at JP & Co. have put together what they call a “Porsche Boxster | Buyer’s Guide & Depreciation” video. It’s not a “Buyer’s Guide” in the true sense of the what we’re used to. It doesn’t point out what to look for on a PPI, or things of that nature. Instead, it looks at the current market value and depreciation curve of most Boxster models from the 986 through to the 718 (inclusive of the Boxster, Boxster S, Spyder, Black Edition and GTS) and provides insight on when the best time to buy each model might be.

You could spend days surfing around various sites trying to compare multiple years and models trying to put together your own data. Or, you could utilize the charts in this video as a starting point for your research and go from there. Unlike the similar video they produced on the 911 Carrera, this Boxster version doesn’t account for mileage and/or options so take that into consideration while digesting the data.

If you watch to the end of the video I would be curious if you agree with some of their generalizations? Especially as it relates to the stereotype of who might buy a cabriolet and why and also their opinion regarding the 986. Personally, as someone who recently purchased a 986 Boxster, I can tell you that buying a well researched version, with a good service history and a comprehensive PPI has been one of the better Porsche purchased I’ve made in quite some time.

  • It is pretty weird to read a chart from right to left but you have to with these charts. Why? Can't you draw from left to right?

  • Gentlemen,

I always enjoy your content. But, I have found that a lot of it is presented as new while it is not. So, I am very careful to check the dates at the beginning of each article.

I am having a problem with your Boxster depreciation article. The article is new, but the video in the body of the article has no such information about when it was shot. Some of the comments the gentlemen makes are somewhat volatile and particularly time sensitive. Can you provide me an idea of the date of this video?

I posted it on the Boxster Register to a firestorm of comments that could be helped if we knew the date when the video was shot. I suspect it is dated. His comments about the "new" 718 are either very old or he is a visionary with insight not yet reported for the second year of the 718.

    Thanks,
    John Szysh

    • Hi, John,

Actually it's "Ladies" :-) Seriously, thanks for taking the time to read and to comment. It's always appreciated.

I'm not really sure what you mean by this statement, "I have found that a lot of it is presented as new while it is not". Other than some of our cornerstone/keystone content (like winters and spring storage tips) that don't change over time but are relevant each year, we don't really post old content intentionally. If we do, like this week's repeat of the original version of the "Last Turn", we let people know and do so for the benefit of our hundreds of news subscribers that sign-up to our mailing list each month.

As to your specific comment(s) on the Boxster video in this post, we can only tell you when it was published on YouTube. That date was May 13, 2017. As the channel where the content comes from is pretty new, we feel very confident in saying that the video itself was shot within the last month (if not sooner).

Your best bet to get a reaction is to post a comment here, for the creator of the video to see and respond to. Or, you can do the same on their YouTube channel.

As an aside, to find out when a YouTube video was posted, you can always click the video itself, and then click on the YouTube logo in the lower right corner. This will bring you directly to YouTube where it shows the published date on that screen. Here's a link for you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsW7lVRsxqM

Thanks again and let us know if we can help with anything else.

  • Not true about GTS. One just sold in Ausie for more than New..also the 718 is really rubbish and an insult to porsche. Big depreciation expected. The GTS is the best of the boxters. Not as powerful as the spyder but the auto roof is a definite sell9mg point above the spyder. I expect the GTS to appreciate in the future like most “last of the range” Porsches tend to do..
