We’ve been compiling some amazing Porsche models on eBay for nearly three years now, and we’ve seen some pretty astonishing cars pop up now and again. This week we’re taking a look at Porsche’s history of entry level sports cars. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed our curated look at the Porsche market. Keep in mind, some of these Porsches could be great collection investments, while others might prove to do more financial harm than good.

1. 1967 Porsche 912 For Sale
The original 912 marked Porsche’s first ‘entry level’ car in the mid-1960s. Customers at the time lamented the 911 as a more expensive, more powerful, and more luxurious car than the 356 it replaced, not to mention they missed that great four-cylinder sound. In order to appease those customers, Porsche introduced the 912, essentially a 911 with a 356’s engine. This is certainly my favorite Porsche model to drive, as it extends the 356 formula to its natural conclusion.
This car is a 5-speed model with green gauges, and a recent engine rebuild. It is said to be clean in the common rust areas, though some surface rust has accumulated around the deck lid and the windshield cowl. It appears to be a nice driver-grade car.

2. 1974 Porsche 914 2.0L For Sale
After the 912’s demise in 1969, Porsche introduced the 914 to replace it as an entry level model. Developed jointly with Volkswagen, and built at the Karmann body facility, the 914 was Porsche’s most successful sales model for two decades, even though it only lasted 6 years. With a Volkswagen-sourced ‘pancake’ flat-four, the 914 was not a power house, but with a mid-engine layout and excellent handling dynamics, it drove better than most anything in its era.
With just 23,000 miles, this 914 appears to be largely original and in very good condition. The phoenix red paint shows well in photographs and the tan interior is a nice touch. I’ve never been a big fan of the 1974’s large bumper extensions, but it looks far better than the 75-76 bumpers, retaining the chrome of the earlier cars.

3. 1976 Porsche 912E Sunroof For Sale
After 914 production ended, Porsche still had a couple thousand engines on their hands, and a shortage of entry-priced models for the US. As a stop-gap until 924 production could reach American shores, Porsche decided to revive the 912 nameplate by stuffing a 914 2-liter engine into the back of a 911 shell to create the 912E. Only 2099 of these were built, and just 500 of those with sunroof.
This car was recently restored in original grand prix white over black leatherette. The sellers claim over $14,000 in recent receipts. It’s slow, but very fun to drive. I have one of these in my own garage and I love it dearly.

4. 1979 Porsche 924 For Sale
In late 1976, the 924 was introduced and completely changed the game for Porsche. This was a parts-bin-engineering exercise that Porsche designed for Volkswagen to sell, using Super Beetle rear suspension, MKI Golf front suspension, an Audi 2-liter watercooled engine, and a transaxle gearbox slung out back. When Volkswagen backed out of the deal, Porsche had too much invested to let it go, so they put their own badge on the car and sold it in their dealership network. This is one of the best driving experiences you can have from Porsche, as the balance is just so perfect and the car so in-tune with the driver. Buy one before they explode in value.
It’s difficult to find a nice 924 these days, and this one appears to be quite nice. Traditional Porsche Guards Red over a brown interior is a very good look for a 924, and with just 29,000 miles on the odometer, this one should serve nicely.

5. 2000 Porsche Boxster For Sale
The 924 ushered in a line of so-called transaxle cars that progressed through 944 and ended with the 968. From 1976 through 1995, the transaxle cars sold well for Porsche and set new sales records seemingly every year. Their success on the showroom floor was vastly overshadowed by that of the original Boxster. The 986 was introduced in 1997, and is often said to be the car that saved Porsche from the brink. This time Porsche mixed excellent mid-engine chassis dynamics with a flat-six engine (for the first time since the limited production 914-6 of 1970 and 1971), and it was an absolutely killer experience.
I chose to include this one not because it’s a particularly good example, its actually quite average with lots of miles and a low price tag. I chose this car because it was the only one I could find with color-matched wheels. There’s something about a color-matched wheel that I just love. This 2.7-liter 5-speed manual model isn’t going to set the world on fire with performance, but it’ll blow you away with stellar handling and top-down fun. For $6500, how could you go wrong?
